Virginia Lawyers Weekly is pleased to present the 2008 survey of “Virginia’s Largest Law Firms” in this issue.
The survey ranks the 75 largest firms in the commonwealth, based on the number of Virginia-licensed attorneys working in offices located within Virginia as of Jan. 1, 2008. The survey also provides information such as address, phone numbers and office locations. Some firms took the opportunity to submit an enhanced listing, providing additional content including Web site address, important firm contacts, areas of practice and lifestyle benefits.
You will find the 20th annual edition of our survey in this week’s paper as a magazine-style insert.
In the 2008 survey, Hunton & Williams claimed the title of Largest Law Firm in Virginia. Last year McGuireWoods held the top spot and in 2006, the two firms had tied at number one.
Last year’s hiring trends continued into 2008, with half the firms in the survey reporting an increase in number of attorneys. Twenty-four firms dropped in numbers from 2007, while 12 remained the same.
In the months since the survey was conducted, the Richmond firm of Wright, Robinson, Osthimer & Tatum merged with LeClairRyan. Also in early 2008, Norfolk-based Taylor & Walker acquired the Richmond law firm of Taylor, Hazen & Kauffman.
Most of the information contained in the survey was provided by firm officials. In the event that we were unable to obtain information, we relied on independent sources such as Martindale-Hubbell or firm Web sites. If any information needs to be corrected or updated, please let us know and we will add it to the online version of the survey.
