Wise County mine death first in state since 2004

A 61-year-old Virginia man has died after a roof collapse at a Wise County mine, marking the state’s first coal-mining death in more than three years.
David Sizemore of Big Stone Gap was airlifted Tuesday to a Kingsport, Tenn., hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours after the accident at Osaka Mine Corporation’s Mine No. 1.
Another miner, Marty Musick, was treated at a hospital in Big Stone Gap and released.
Sizemore’s job was drilling the roof and inserting long steel bolts to hold the rock together.
Officials say the men were standing beneath a bolted mine roof when the roof collapsed about 9 a.m.
The death was Virginia’s first mining fatality since October 2004, according to state mining officials. It was the first roof-fall fatality since March 2001.
