Charles E. Gates Jr., a second-year student at the Washington and Lee law school, will be student editor of Student Lawyer magazine for the 2008-09 academic year. Published by the American Bar Association, Student Lawyer provides information and guidance on issues affecting law students across the county.
“I am excited for the opportunities this position offers me to represent Washington and Lee on a national level,” said Gates. “This position is a perfect blend of my love for journalism and the law.”
Gates, a graduate of Stanford University who transferred to W&L this year, served as a communications specialist and press secretary within the administration of Maryland Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich before attending law school. Gates was selected for the student editor position after interviews with the magazine editor and ABA student division chair and director.
As student editor, Gates is responsible for recruiting writers, assigning topics, writing and editing articles for the magazine’s Division Dia-logue section. Each month he will review the magazine copy and make comments to the editor, Whit-ney Ward. Gates has already convinced Student Lawyer to cover the law schools’ third-year curriculum re-form in an up-coming article on trends in legal education.
Student Lawyer is published each month from September to May and delivered to every member of the ABA Law Student Division.
In his new position, Gates also serves as a member of the Board of Governors for the ABA Law Student Division.
In addition to working for Student Lawyer, will serve W&L as managing editor of the Environmental Law Digest and as a student attorney in the Community Legal Practice Clinic.
