DANVILLE—A legal effort to halt demolition of the historic Dan River Mills complex has failed.
The Danville Historical Society was denied its request for an injunction against crews dismantling the textile complex.
Circuit Judge David Melesco issued the ruling last Tuesday based on the overall deterioration of the buildings. He said their condition posed a danger to the public and would be subject to vandalism if they were allowed to remain standing.
Some of the buildings being torn down are at least 100 years old or older. They have been described in the past as being part of one of the most complete, intact mill complexes still existing in the country.
At its peak, Dan River Mills employed 12,000 and was Danville’s largest industry.
