Brenda Spry, the longtime deputy public defender in Portsmouth, has been named the city’s public defender.
Spry, who joined the office in 1990, had been acting defender at times during the illness of her predecessor John H. Underwood III, who opened the office in 1986. Mr. Underwood, known as “Jay,” died in March after an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
A graduate of Old Dominion University and the College of William and Mary law school, Spry had served earlier as acting defender in Suffolk for nine months during the illness of the defender there. She will supervise an office that includes 16 attorneys.
