APCO to SCC: Let customers decide on renewable resources

Appalachian Power wants to give its Virginia customers the option of choosing renewable sources for their energy needs.
The subsidiary of American Electric Power asked the Virginia State Corporation Commission on Tuesday to approve a billing option that would allow customers to select renewable energy sources.
Customers who select a renewable energy source will pay an additional $1.50 over their usual power costs for each 100 kilowatt hours of that energy source.
The program will initially use energy and renewable energy credits associated with the Summersville, W.Va., Hydro Plant.
Appalachian Power said it hopes to offer the option by September.
The utility has 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee.
