Catch a thief and you’re sitting on top of the world…

A routine bar meeting at the beach this summer gave one Virginia prosecutor the chance to take his own bite out of crime.

Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Morrogh was down in Virginia Beach for the annual confab of the Virginia Commonwealth’s Attorneys Association July 31.

He had just left a meeting at the Cavalier Hotel when he spotted a stranger carrying a surfboard that looked a lot like his. Actually it was his surfboard. Morrogh challenged the apparent thief, who was accompanied by two others.

According to a police report, the thief lunged at Morrogh and took off, leaving the 9-foot Velzy surfboard behind in its carrying bag. In the scuffle, however, Morrogh broke his foot.

Undeterred, Morrogh took off after the culprit, who was quickly apprehended.

Two men and a teenage girl are accused of attempted larceny. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 12.

Morrogh regained his old-school long board, but lost the chance to use it that weekend. He is on the mend with crutches, a boot cast and new achievement for his resume.
